Three layers, one palette — warm at eight, comfortable at three.

The idea
Good layering is not more clothes. It's fewer clothes, in the right order.

Three layers is the whole system: something fine against the skin, something with texture over it, something with a shoulder on top. Each one should look finished on its own, because during a September day you will wear all three combinations.
The capsule
- 1
A fine base
Cotton, silk, or merino. Thin enough to disappear under everything else.
- 2
A middle layer with texture
A knit, an overshirt, a fine cardigan — this is where interest lives.
- 3
An outer layer with structure
A trench, an unlined blazer, a soft coat. It sets the line of the whole outfit.
- 4
Lengths that step down
Base shortest, middle slightly longer, coat longest. Never the reverse.
- 5
One palette across all three
Two neutrals and one accent, so any two layers still agree.
Styling notes
Keep bulk away from the waist: tuck the base, leave the middle layer soft, and let the outer layer hang open. Step the lengths down so hems don't collide, and keep every layer in the same colour family — camel over cream over stone reads calm; three strong colours read like laundry. Shoes and belt anchor it in one leather.
Questions
How many layers should I wear?
+
Three is the working maximum for most weather: a fine base, a textured middle, and a structured outer. More than that adds bulk without adding warmth.
How do I layer without looking bulky?
+
Keep the base thin and tucked, step the lengths down so hems don't overlap, and choose fabrics with drape rather than volume. Bulk collects at the waist first.
What fabrics layer best?
+
Merino, fine cotton, and silk against the skin; wool, cashmere, or cotton twill above. They compress rather than puff, so the coat still closes properly.
