The idea

Leather's edge is the whole point — the trick is softening everything else around it so the outfit doesn't tip into costume.

A leather jacket over a silk shirt, or a leather skirt with a soft knit, gives the fabric room to do its work without the whole look feeling like armour. One leather piece at a time, paired with something fluid, is almost always the right ratio.

How many leather pieces can be worn at once?

Two works well if they're separated by fabric in between, like a leather jacket and leather boots with a fluid dress or trouser in the middle. Leather head-to-toe with nothing soft in between reads more costume than considered.

Does leather have to look edgy or tough?
