The idea

At the opera, the outfit should be seen in the foyer and forgotten in the dark.

Deep tones, fine cloth, and a silhouette you can sit in for three hours. Sound matters as much as shape: no crisp taffeta, no stacked bangles, nothing that announces every movement.

Styling notes

Two deep tones and one metal. Velvet, crepe, and fine wool all photograph well under foyer light and stay quiet in the dark. Keep fragrance light — the seats are close — and choose a clutch small enough to hold on your lap.

Is there a dress code for the opera?

Most houses ask for smart or cocktail dress rather than black tie, except on gala nights. A fluid midi or a fine dark suit is right almost everywhere.
