The idea
Rain ruins outfits from the ground up, not the top down.

Most rainy days are lost at the hem and the shoe, long before the coat matters. Shorten the trouser, seal the foot, choose cloth that dries without marking — then the top half can stay exactly as elegant as any other day.
The capsule
- 1
A coat that sheds water
Cotton gabardine or a treated trench. Longer than the jacket underneath.
- 2
A hem off the ground
Cropped trouser or a midi that clears the pavement.
- 3
A sealed shoe
Leather boot or loafer with a proper sole. Suede stays home.
- 4
Cloth that dries flat
Wool, denim, or technical blends. Avoid pale silk and raw linen.
- 5
One dark base
Ink, charcoal, or chocolate hides the splash line.
Styling notes
Keep the silhouette long and narrow so nothing collects water. Darker below, lighter above, is the reliable rainy-day balance — it stays clean-looking through the walk and still reads bright indoors. A compact umbrella in a plain colour is part of the outfit; an oversized branded one is not.
Questions
What coat is best for rain?
+
A cotton gabardine trench or a treated wool coat with a good length. It should cover whatever you're wearing underneath by several inches.
What shoes should I wear in the rain?
+
A leather boot or loafer with a rubber sole. Suede, canvas, and fine soles all mark permanently.
How do I look elegant in bad weather?
+
Fix the hem and the shoe first, keep the palette dark below and lighter above, and choose cloth that dries without a watermark.
