The idea

One step below the wedding, one step above dinner.

A welcome party is where everyone meets for the first time, usually standing, often outdoors. Keep it relaxed but considered: soft tailoring or a simple dress in a good fabric, nothing that competes with tomorrow, and a shoe that survives three hours upright.

The capsule

  • 1

Soft tailoring or a simple dress

Relaxed shape, good cloth, no ceremony.

  • 2

    A warm mid-tone palette

Olive, clay, navy, cream. Save the strong colour for tomorrow.

  • 3

    One easy layer

A linen jacket or a fine knit for an outdoor terrace.

  • 4

    A standing shoe

A block heel, loafer or clean leather flat.

  • 5

    A small crossbody bag

You will be shaking hands all evening.

Styling notes

The rule is simple: dress a clear step below the wedding itself. Soft tailoring, a simple dress or a good shirt and trouser in a warm mid-tone reads as thoughtful without pulling focus from the couple or from tomorrow. Most welcome parties are standing and at least partly outdoors, so bring one easy layer and choose the shoe you could greet forty people in. Keep the strongest colour and the best jewellery in the suitcase for the ceremony — tonight is for being easy to talk to.

Questions

How dressed up should a welcome party outfit be?

+

One step below the wedding. Relaxed tailoring or a simple dress in a good fabric is right; save the strongest colour and the formal shoe for the ceremony itself.

Can I wear the same outfit to the wedding the next day?

+

Better not to. Nearly everyone at the welcome party will be at the ceremony, and the photographs from both nights end up side by side.

What if the party is outdoors?

+

Bring one easy layer and a shoe with a stable sole. Terraces, gardens and gravel are the usual settings, and the temperature drops the moment the sun goes.

Dress with ease, every day.

Free to try. Ready in a moment.
