The idea
A capsule is not a smaller wardrobe. It's a wardrobe where every piece has already agreed with the others.

Autumn is the easiest season to do this well: the palette wants to be narrow anyway, and the layers do the variety for you. Twelve pieces, two neutrals, one accent, one leather colour — that covers a working week, a weekend, and dinner out.
The capsule
- 1
Two tailored trousers
One dark, one neutral. Straight or slightly wide, both mid-rise.
- 2
One skirt or a pair of dark jeans
Whichever you actually reach for. Only one, or the capsule stops working.
- 3
Three fine knits
Merino or cashmere in cream, camel, and ink. They carry the whole season.
- 4
Two shirts
One crisp cotton, one softer. Both worn tucked or open over a base.
- 5
A blazer and a trench
The blazer sharpens; the trench covers. Between them, most weather.
- 6
Three shoes
A loafer, a low heel, and one clean sneaker. All in two leathers, no more.
Styling notes
Choose the palette before the pieces — camel, cream and ink, with chocolate leather, is the most forgiving autumn set. Buy the knits first; they do more work than anything else in the season. Keep every hem length compatible so any top works with any bottom, and resist adding a twelfth piece that only goes with one other thing.
The one sneaker a capsule needs
A quiet edit of minimalist white and cream leather sneakers — low-profile silhouettes, no loud branding — styled for work, dinner, and everyday ease.
Questions
How many pieces should an autumn capsule have?
+
Around twelve is enough for a full season: two trousers, one skirt or jean, three knits, two shirts, a blazer, a coat, and three shoes. The number matters less than the palette being narrow.
What colours work best for an autumn capsule?
+
Camel, cream, ink, and chocolate combine in almost any order. Add one accent — olive, burgundy, or rust — as a single knit or scarf rather than a whole piece of tailoring.
Can a capsule wardrobe cover both work and weekends?
+
Yes, if the shoes and the layer change. The same trousers and knit read as work with a blazer and a loafer, and as weekend with a trench and a clean sneaker.
