The idea
Business casual means tailored without the suit, and relaxed without the weekend.

It is the space between a boardroom and a coffee shop: structured shoulders, real shoes, no tie required. The reliable version is a narrow palette of three colours, one tailored element, and cloth that holds its shape by six in the evening.
The capsule
- 1
A tailored trouser
Wool or wool blend in charcoal, navy, or stone. Not chinos in the front row.
- 2
A fine knit or crisp shirt
Merino, cotton poplin, or silk. Ironed, always.
- 3
One structured layer
An unstructured blazer or a clean overshirt to lift the whole thing.
- 4
A real shoe
Loafer, derby, or a clean minimal leather sneaker where the office allows it.
- 5
A quiet bag
Leather or heavy canvas, one colour, no visible branding.
Styling notes
Three colours, maximum, and let one of them be a neutral doing most of the work. Business casual fails on fabric, not on shape — a good cut in poor cloth looks tired by lunch. If you're unsure how formal the room is, keep the trouser tailored and let the top layer relax; that direction is always easier to read than the reverse.
Office-appropriate sneakers
A quiet edit of minimalist white and cream leather sneakers — low-profile silhouettes, no loud branding — styled for work, dinner, and everyday ease.
Questions
Are jeans business casual?
+
Dark, clean, unripped denim passes in creative and tech offices. In finance, law, and client-facing work, keep to a tailored trouser.
Can I wear sneakers with business casual?
+
A minimal white or cream leather sneaker, in good condition, works in most modern offices. Anything athletic or heavily branded does not.
Do I need a blazer for business casual?
+
Not always, but one structured layer makes almost any combination read intentional. An unlined blazer or a clean overshirt both qualify.
