The idea

Deeper colour, one point of light.

An evening wedding asks for a richer palette than a daytime one and rewards restraint everywhere except a single detail. Choose depth of colour over sparkle, add one considered shine — an earring, a satin shoe, a metal clasp — and plan for the temperature after the speeches.

The capsule

  • 1

A dress or suit in a deep tone

Ink, forest, plum, chocolate. Never white or cream.

  • 2

    One point of shine

A satin shoe, a metal earring, a beaded clutch. One.

  • 3

    A proper evening layer

A fine wrap or a tailored coat for the walk between venues.

  • 4

    A shoe rated for hours

A block heel or a polished flat you have already worn in.

  • 5

A small bag with a strap

Hands free for a glass and a greeting.

Styling notes

Let the colour carry the formality. A deep, saturated tone reads as evening far more reliably than embellishment does, and it photographs beautifully under warm light. Pick one point of shine and stop there — a satin shoe or a good earring, not both plus a beaded bag. The gap between ceremony, dinner and dancing is nearly always colder and longer than the invitation implies, so bring a real layer rather than a token one, and choose a heel height you have already stood in for three hours.

Questions

What colours work for an evening wedding?

+

Deep, saturated tones — ink, forest, plum, burgundy, chocolate. Avoid white, cream and anything close to the bridal palette, and be careful with pale pastels, which read as daytime.

How formal is an evening wedding?

+

Usually one step above a daytime one. Unless the invitation says black tie, a deep-toned dress or a well-cut suit with one considered accessory is comfortably right.

What about the cold after the ceremony?

+

Bring a real layer: a fine wool wrap or a tailored coat. Evening receptions move between rooms, gardens and cars, and a token shawl rarely covers the gap.
