Styling notes

Get the hem right — it decides the entire silhouette. Keep skin exposure to one area: back, shoulders, or leg. If the invitation says black tie, take it literally; a gala is one of the few evenings where following the code exactly is the elegant move.

Usually black tie or formal: floor-length for women, a dinner jacket or dark suit for men. Check the invitation wording — galas state their code.

Can I wear a cocktail dress to a gala?

Only if the invitation says cocktail. For black tie, floor-length or a very formal midi in heavy cloth is the safer read.

How much jewellery is right for a gala?
