The idea

In real heat, fabric matters more than shape.

Anything close to the skin should be woven, not knitted, and pale rather than dark. Give the body air: a loose sleeve, a wide leg, an open shoe. Then carry one light layer, because the places you are going will be over-cooled.

The capsule

  • 1

A loose linen or cotton shirt

Long sleeves shade the arms better than bare skin does.

  • 2

A wide trouser or fluid skirt

Air moving is the whole point. Nothing that clings.

  • 3

    A pale palette

Ivory, sand, chalk blue. Dark cloth in full sun is a mistake you feel.

  • 4

    An open, flat shoe

A leather sandal or woven flat with a real sole.

  • 5

    One light layer

For restaurants and trains that run ten degrees colder.

Styling notes

Keep everything one half-size looser than usual and let the fabric do the work — linen, cotton poplin, fine viscose. Two pale tones and one deeper accent reads composed rather than washed out. Skip anything lined, anything synthetic against the skin, and anything that needs a belt to sit right. A flat leather sandal, sunglasses and a straw or canvas bag finish it without effort.

Questions

What fabrics are best in a heatwave?

+

Loosely woven natural fibres: linen, cotton poplin, fine silk or viscose. They move air across the skin. Jersey, denim and anything synthetic hold heat against you.

Should I wear long sleeves in extreme heat?

+

A loose long sleeve in light cloth is often cooler than bare arms in direct sun — it shades the skin while still letting air through.

What shoes work in very hot weather?

+

A flat leather sandal or an open woven flat with a proper sole. Feet swell in heat, so choose the pair with an adjustable strap.
