What to wear to a housewarming.
Someone else's new floors, no coat rack, and everyone standing up.

The idea
A housewarming is a standing party in an unfinished room.

There is nowhere to put a coat, the heating is either off or overwhelming, and you will be on your feet for three hours. Dress one notch above ordinary, wear something you can stand in, and choose a sock you are happy to be seen in — shoes often come off at the door.
The capsule
- 1
A soft knit or relaxed shirt
Warm enough for a half-heated room, light enough for a crowded one.
- 2
A comfortable trouser or easy dress
Three hours upright, no chair guaranteed.
- 3
A shoe that slips off cleanly
New floors, and often a no-shoes rule.
- 4
One good sock
It will be seen. Plain, dark, intact.
- 5
A small bag or none at all
There is nowhere to set anything down.
Styling notes
Keep it relaxed but finished: one considered piece — a good knit, a well-cut shirt — carries the whole outfit in a casual room. Avoid anything you have to adjust while holding a glass, and skip long or loose jewellery around a crowded kitchen. A layer you can remove matters more than the outfit underneath, because these rooms swing from cold to warm within an hour.
Sneaker inspiration
A quiet edit of minimalist white and cream leather sneakers — low-profile silhouettes, no loud branding — styled for work, dinner, and everyday ease.
Questions
Should I dress up for a housewarming?
+
One notch above everyday. A good knit or shirt with a clean trouser is right almost everywhere — full evening dress reads as a misunderstanding.
What if shoes come off at the door?
+
Assume they will. Wear a shoe that slips off without a struggle and a plain, intact sock in a dark colour.
What should I bring?
+
Something small and consumable — wine, good olive oil, flowers already in a wrap. Nothing that needs a vase they have not unpacked yet.
